Hassan Mamdhooh, also known as Mandey, the main accused in an alleged apartment sale fraud linked to the K-Park Residences development in Hulhumalé, has been taken into police custody ahead of his sentencing hearing.
Police confirmed that Mamdhooh was arrested at the request of the Criminal Court after he failed to attend a scheduled hearing. His case had been scheduled for Thursday, but he did not appear.
According to court proceedings, Mamdhooh had requested the cancellation of the hearing. However, presiding judge Ali Nadheem ruled that the trial would proceed as scheduled.
The state has filed more than 100 charges against Mamdhooh, a shareholder of Hanbo Company, which was contracted to construct the K-Park Residences project. Prosecutors allege that he embezzled money from numerous individuals under the pretext of selling apartments in the development.
In connection with the same case, the state has also filed 95 charges against another accused, Jaishan Saeed. On Thursday, the judge found Jaishan guilty of one count of fraud related to the K-Park case and ordered that he be held in custody until the conclusion of his trial.
In June, the court had previously ordered Mamdhooh to be detained until the end of his trial after he failed to appear in court. However, he was later released following a subsequent court decision.
