Newly Formed Zakat Council Holds Inaugural Meeting

The newly established Zakat Council, formed under the Zakat Act of 1 January 2025, held its first meeting today.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Islamic Affairs and President of the Zakat Council. Council members focused on establishing effective, transparent, and systematic operations for the Maldives Zakat House, as outlined in the Zakat Act.
The nine-member council includes representatives from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the Supreme Council for Islamic Fatwa, the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), and zakat experts appointed by the President.

The council’s primary mandate is to provide strategic guidance on administrative management, policy direction, and oversight of the national zakat system. Members discussed key operational and administrative matters to ensure the institution begins its work efficiently.
Officials described the meeting as a significant milestone in strengthening zakat governance in the Maldives and ensuring the effective implementation of the Zakat Act.
