The government has reported a positive response to its ongoing walk-in interview for drivers under the new government taxi line service.

The recruitment drive, held at the Maafannu Bus Terminal from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm yesterday, aims to hire a total of 407 drivers, including 285 full-time and 122 part-time positions, to support the launch of a modern and reliable taxi service across Malé.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, which has been entrusted with operating the service under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, stated that priority will be given to applicants already registered in the Ministry’s official taxi driver registry.

The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to address ongoing public difficulties in accessing taxi services and to improve urban mobility in the capital.

The new taxi service will operate 24 hours a day and is designed along the lines of international ride-hailing platforms, using a fleet of electric vehicles in three different sizes.

The Ministry has confirmed that earlier delays caused by concerns over the suitability of vehicles for local conditions have been resolved, with vehicle customisation and production now in progress.
