Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has reiterated that housing projects launched under the current administration will be completed and handed over to recipients within the government’s term.
Speaking in a media interview to mark the launch of the first scheme under the government’s Housing for All policy, Dr Muththalib emphasised that the projects currently being announced — including land plots and apartment developments — are fully financed and backed by secured funding, ensuring their implementation will not stall. Construction has not yet begun on any of the housing projects announced for the Greater Malé area by the current government. In April last year, the government unveiled a 400-unit affordable housing project in Hulhumalé phase 2, funded by the Saudi Development Fund (SDF). No further details were provided at the time, and construction on the project has still not started.
He highlighted that the housing programme includes large-scale development projects financed with support from the Government of India, including 4,000 housing units. Projects supported by the Saudi Fund and other international partners are also part of the government’s housing pipeline, he said.
Under the new allocation schemes, a total of 15,000 land plots measuring 1,250 square feet each will be issued across the Greater Malé region and Ras Malé, targeting Malé residents seeking land for residential development. In addition, 7,900 flats will be allocated within the Greater Malé region under the flat allocation scheme.
Dr Muththalib stressed that providing housing to those most in need remains the government’s top policy priority, reflecting its commitment to improving access to adequate and affordable housing across the country.
