MIFCO Plans to Revitalise Kanduohgiri as Seafood Processing Hub
MIFCO plans to transform Kanduohgiri into a key hub for seafood and commodities
The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced plans to revitalise Kanduohgiri as a central hub for the production of common commodities and seafood processing.
Following the resumption of its operations, the company has restarted the purchase of yellowfin tuna from local fishermen, offering MVR 25 per kilogram for catches weighing more than 15 kilograms.
The four-hectare Kanduohgiri facility, which previously served as MIFCO’s main site for lifestyle and ready-to-eat products, has been officially handed over to the state-owned enterprise, marking a significant step in its redevelopment.
As part of the initial phase, MIFCO plans to establish a cold storage unit at Kanduohgiri and provide ice and fuel supplies to fishermen, with the aim of improving post-harvest handling. In later stages, the site is expected to be developed into a central fish processing hub to support both domestic distribution and export activities.
The initiative is aligned with broader plans to develop a 25,000-square-foot fish processing facility in Hulhumalé, which will be funded by the Islamic Development Bank. Development of the Hulhumalé facility is expected to commence within this month.
