Government Opens Applications for Chinese Government Scholarships for 2026–27

The government has opened applications for the Chinese Government Scholarship for the 2026–27 academic year, offering Maldivian students opportunities to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in China.
According to an announcement published in the gazette, the scholarship programme is facilitated through the Embassy of China in the Maldives and covers Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD-level studies at Chinese universities. Fields of study available under the scheme are those offered by the Chinese Scholarship Council and listed on its official portal.
Applicants for Bachelor’s degree programmes are required to have at least five GCE O-Level or equivalent passes with a minimum grade of ‘C’, along with three GCE A-Level passes with at least grade ‘E’ or a related diploma. English language proficiency is required where English was not studied at O-Level, while applicants for medical-related programmes must meet criteria set by the Maldives Medical and Dental Council. Bachelor’s applicants must also have completed or registered for the Chinese Scholastic Competence Assessment (CSCA) and be under 25 years of age as of 10 February 2026.

Applicants for Master’s programmes must hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree and be under 35 years of age, while PhD applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree and be under 40 years of age. For programmes taught in Chinese, applicants at postgraduate levels are required to have at least HSK Level 4, while Bachelor’s applicants must have HSK Level 3.
The Ministry said applicants must not be in default of any government education loan or currently enrolled in a programme at the same or higher level funded by the state. Completed applications must be submitted with academic certificates and transcripts, a copy of a Maldivian ID card and other supporting documents, including medical council registration where applicable.
All eligible applicants will be nominated by the Ministry, with final selection carried out by the scholarship provider. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, medical insurance and a monthly stipend, while return airfare will be provided by the government. University placement will be determined by the Chinese Scholarship Council, and some students may be required to complete up to two years of Chinese language training before commencing their academic programmes.
Applications must be submitted through the MyEdu portal by 29 January, before 1:30 pm.
