The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast unclear air conditions across the country for the next five days.

Air quality in Male’ City is currently recorded at an Air Quality Index level of 111, indicating elevated pollution levels. Measurements show that the capital’s air contains 39.8 micrograms of dust, smoke, and particulate matter per cubic metre, which is around eight times higher than the limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

The Meteorological Service expects air pollution to remain at similar levels over the coming days, with visibility in Male’ City likely to reduce to approximately three kilometres. Deteriorating air quality has also been reported across most southern islands, although Addu City and Fuvahmulah continue to experience comparatively clearer conditions.

An AQI reading of 111 places Male’ City in the orange alert category. The Health Protection Agency has previously stated that air quality levels between 101 and 150 pose increased health risks for vulnerable groups and individuals with respiratory conditions.

The agency advises vulnerable individuals to wear masks when outdoors, keep doors and windows closed to limit indoor exposure to polluted air, and delay sports or strenuous outdoor activities until conditions improve.

Air quality had been clear earlier last week before worsening again. The current conditions coincide with the school holidays, a period when many families are travelling to different parts of the country.
