The government will begin distributing tuna cans to households as part of its annual Ramadan gift programme tonight across the Maldives.

Local Government Minister Adam Shareef said the distribution system, developed by the Maldives Police Service and used in previous years, allows households to collect tuna cases without queuing. Complaints regarding the process can be submitted via WhatsApp or Telegram to 7741446. The portal to get the token for the queue was opened on Thursday.

Minister Shareef stated that distribution will take place nightly from 8:30pm to 11:00pm, except on Fridays. In Malé, each household with a separate electricity meter will be entitled to one tuna case. In the atolls, allocations will be based on household lists compiled by island and city councils, with officials assuring that every household on the lists will receive a case.

In the Greater Malé region, distribution will occur across 15 centres. Malé will host eight centres, including the MIFCO Centre, Social Centre, MTCC Sawmill, Henveiru Stadium, and four entrances at Galolhu Stadium. Hulhumalé will have six centres across Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 distribution points include the Umar Zahir Building, Polco Towers, and Gasim Pre School, while Phase 2 centres will operate from Kamil Didi School, Hiyaa Flat 10, and Vinares Towers. A single centre has been designated in Vilimale at the WAMCO site.
