Maldives Blood Services Calls For Urgent Blood Donations Amid Supply Shortage
Urgent appeal for blood donations issued following drop in national blood bank supplies
The Maldives Blood Services has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations following a significant decline in supplies at the national blood bank.
In a public announcement, the service reported that blood stocks from several groups have reached critically low levels. The blood groups currently in urgent demand are A positive, B positive, AB positive, O positive, B negative, and O negative.
The Maldives Blood Services has called on all eligible donors to come forward, noting that reserves have dropped considerably and additional donations are required to meet ongoing medical needs.
Blood donations are accepted at the Maldives Blood Services Blood Bank located at Orange Hiya in Hulhumale’ Phase 1. The facility is open from 08:00 to 20:00, from Saturday to Thursday.
To be eligible to donate, individuals must be at least 18 years of age and weigh a minimum of 45 kilograms. Donors are also advised to have at least six hours of sleep and to eat at least one hour before donating.
The service highlighted that blood donations play a critical role in saving lives and supporting healthcare services across the country.
