State Electric Company (STELCO) has begun increasing electricity generation capacity across islands in preparation for Ramadan and the upcoming peak demand season.

The company started shipping new generator sets to islands on 14 January as part of efforts to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and improve service quality during periods of high consumption. STELCO said the project is intended to enhance the reliability of electricity services in island areas and strengthen overall power supply during Ramadan and the Iruvai monsoon, when electricity usage typically rises.

As part of the preparations, STELCO has completed several upgrades. A 600 kW generator has been installed at the Thaa Atoll Thinadhoo power plant, increasing the total generation capacity to 1,539 kW. A new 600 kW generator has been brought to Alifu Alifu Atoll Mathiveri, raising capacity to 1,650 kW. A 1,000 kW generator is now operational in Alifu Alifu Atoll Ukulhas, increasing capacity to 2,564 kW, while an additional 1,000 kW generator has been installed in Alifu Alifu Atoll Thoddoo, raising the island’s capacity to 3,592 kW.

Installation work has also begun for 15 generator sets in the Malé area. A 1,000 kW generator has been added in Kaafu Atoll Guraidhoo, bringing the island’s capacity to 2,960 kW, and a 1,200 kW generator has been installed in Vilimale’.

STELCO said these measures are aimed at maintaining a 24-hour uninterrupted electricity supply, particularly during Ramadan and the early months of the Iruvai monsoon, when demand traditionally peaks. The company reiterated its commitment to improving power infrastructure and maintaining stable electricity services for communities across the Maldives.
