Launch of first batch of Marine Hatchery Skills Programme takes place in Maniyafushi

The first batch of this year’s Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme has been launched in Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll.

The programme is led by the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) with support from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and the World Bank–funded TransFORM Project. It aims to strengthen national capacity, promote innovation, and support long-term development in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The initiative also seeks to develop the country’s mariculture sector, generate additional income and employment opportunities in the atolls, and diversify economic activities nationwide.

According to the Fisheries Ministry, four batches of the mariculture training programme have been conducted over the past two years, training a total of 53 individuals.

The programme provides training in various aspects of mariculture, including aquaculture systems, and offers lessons on breeding four key species: groupers, sea cucumbers, Maldive anemone fish, and nacre.
