The government has announced plans to complete the construction of a new hospital in Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll, by the end of this year, a project aimed at addressing longstanding gaps in healthcare provision across the region.
Residents of Thulhaadhoo, numbering over 3,100, have long expressed frustration over the lack of adequate medical facilities. In response, the government launched the development of a modern hospital on 24 July 2023. The project was initially scheduled for completion within 18 months, but the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) acknowledged that progress has been slower than expected due to various challenges. MTCC has pledged to intensify efforts to ensure the facility is delivered within the current year.
Construction teams are currently engaged in masonry and cement plastering. The hospital, designed as a two-storey structure, carries a project valuation of USD 8.05 million. Upon completion, it will feature 30 beds and be equipped with modern medical resources. The project also includes a dedicated accommodation block within the hospital complex to support staff and operational needs.
The hospital’s completion is considered crucial for Baa Atoll, a region known for its concentration of luxury resorts but limited healthcare infrastructure. Currently, the primary hospital serving the atoll is located on Eydhafushi. Patients from Thulhaadhoo often have to travel to Eydhafushi or the capital, Malé, for medical care, creating logistical challenges and significant financial burdens, particularly when treatment abroad is required.
The establishment of the new hospital is expected to strengthen healthcare provision across the atoll and mark a significant milestone in Thulhaadhoo’s development.
