Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched a major upgrade of the rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes used for container operations at the Male’ Commercial Port.

The modernisation programme will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will focus on upgrading the cranes’ control and drive systems, while the second phase, scheduled to begin in July, will involve enhancements to the engine and power systems.

The RTG cranes were first introduced in 2007 and have been in service for 19 years. MPL has said the upgrade is necessary to ensure continued reliability and operational efficiency.

The Male’ Commercial Port has undergone several developments in recent years, with some operations relocated due to space constraints. MPL stated that the RTG crane upgrade forms part of broader efforts to accelerate and modernise port operations.
