India Marks 77th Republic Day with Reception in Malé

The High Commission of India in Malé hosted a national day reception on Monday to mark the 77th Republic Day of India, bringing together senior Maldivian officials, diplomats and other dignitaries.

The event, held at the Social Centre in Malé on 26 January 2026, was attended by more than 500 guests. Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Khaleel, attended as the chief guest, alongside senior ministers and government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the private sector.

Speaking at the reception, India’s High Commissioner, G. Balasubramanian, highlighted the significance of Republic Day and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening its close ties with the Maldives. He said the bilateral relationship is grounded in shared democratic values, mutual respect and people-centred development.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, in his remarks, described India–Maldives relations as multi-faceted and long-standing. He also referred to recent developments in bilateral cooperation, including the inauguration of Hanimadhoo International Airport.

As part of the event, a photo exhibition marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives was inaugurated. The exhibition showcased key milestones in bilateral ties, including high-level visits and moments of cooperation over the decades.

The reception also featured a cultural performance by a Qawwali group from India, as well as a presentation of Indian cuisine representing different regions of the country.

The annual national day reception is a key diplomatic event and is aimed at celebrating India’s constitutional values while further strengthening bilateral relations and people-to-people ties between India and the Maldives.
