The Ministry of Health has awarded a contract to establish a private room facility at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH).

The project, which will include private rooms with isolation capabilities, has been contracted to Altec Maldives Private Limited.

The work has been assigned for MVR 53.6 million, with a completion timeline of one year and two months. The agreement was signed by State Minister Khadheeja Abdul Samad Abdulla on behalf of the Ministry of Health and General Manager Hussain Tasmeen on behalf of Altec Maldives.

The project is funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), marking the bank’s first standalone project in the Maldives. KRH provides services to the highest number of patients outside of Malé, serving residents from Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, and nearby atolls.

Currently, patients seeking services at KRH must be admitted to general wards, creating challenges for patients and their helpers, particularly those requiring long-term care while travelling from other islands. The hospital also faces several operational difficulties.

It lacks the ability to isolate patients with highly communicable diseases such as COVID-19. Although KRH is a centre for medical students’ community modules and other health sector training, the hospital must rent external venues or halls for training sessions. Despite managing over 700 staff members across the atoll, the hospital does not have adequate facilities for staff training.

The new facility will feature 14 private rooms, each with an attached toilet, with designated rooms for moderate, critical, and special-needs patients. The building will also include a dialysis room, emergency room, medical and general stores, nursing stations, an autoclave room, administrative and briefing rooms, a utility room, a tea room, and a prayer room. A multi-purpose hall will be located on the first floor.

The Ministry of Health stated that the completion of the facility will provide significant relief to patients travelling from various islands. It will also allow patients with communicable diseases to be isolated, enabling the hospital’s general services to continue without disruption.
