The Education Minister, Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, has revealed that the Quran will be included in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations from next year.
The SSC and O-level examinations are end-of-Grade 10 assessments taken by Maldivian students. At present, the SSC examinations are conducted in two subjects: Islam and the Dhivehi language.
The Education Ministry has stated that the inclusion of the Quran aims to foster interest and appreciation for the holy book among students. A pilot programme will be conducted this year ahead of its official introduction next year.
Quran is currently taught as a subject up to the end of Grade 10, but students do not sit for a formal examination in the subject during the O-levels.
