The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has amended the Taxi Regulation, reducing the minimum number of vehicles and drivers required to register a taxi centre from 100 to 50.
The change, published in today’s government gazette, is part of broader amendments aimed at simplifying the process for establishing taxi centres. According to the ministry, lowering the requirement will allow more people to enter the sector, increase competition, and improve service quality for passengers. It is also expected to help centres manage demand during peak hours.
The amendments further allow operators to run taxi services through mobile apps or online platforms with special permission from the ministry. In preparation for the launch of MTCC’s taxi services in the Maldives, a clause was added to ensure that taxi service provision is included within a company’s mandate.
The ministry emphasised that the reforms are designed to create a reliable and modern taxi system that benefits both service providers and passengers.
