A fire that broke out on Friday night at Tower 5 of the Hiyaa flats in Hulhumalé damaged sewerage pipes servicing 38 apartments, prompting emergency response and temporary relocation of dozens of residents.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said firefighters from the Malé Area Command and Hulhumalé Fire Station responded to the incident after receiving a report at around 18:33. On arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke throughout the building and immediately evacuated residents while ventilating the premises to clear the smoke.

According to the MNDF, the fire originated from an air-conditioning outdoor unit located inside the service shaft between the ninth and 14th floors. Firefighters contained the blaze, but it caused significant damage to the plumbing and drainage systems running through the shaft.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that sewerage pipes connected to 38 apartments were affected. The authority said 85 people from 18 apartments reported requiring immediate assistance, and it has since provided them with emergency accommodation and catering.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is currently on site assessing the extent of the damage and has begun repair works on the sewerage system. NDMA said HDC is also working in coordination with the authority to investigate additional issues linked to the incident.

A joint investigation involving HDC and other relevant authorities is under way to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fire and to assess whether further safety measures are required.
