Adhaalath Party Elects Sheikh Mohamed Shifan as President With 99% of Vote
Sheikh Mohamed Shifan, the current vice-president of the Adhaalath Party, has been elected party president.
Sheikh Mohamed Shifan, current vice-president of the Adhaalath Party, has won the party’s presidential election with 99% of the votes cast in an online ballot, the party said.
His only challenger, Dr Ikram Abdul Saththar, received 1% after having withdrawn from the contest ahead of the vote. In a letter addressed to party members, Dr Ikram said he would boycott the election, alleging it was being conducted “outside the rules of democracy and the principles of two-sided justice”. He also claimed there was a conspiracy to engineer a predetermined result and facilitate what he described as a dictatorial system.

The party did not disclose how many members took part in the vote. It said that 22% of ballots were cast through an online portal. According to data from the Elections Commission, the party has around 8,200 registered members.
Despite Dr Ikram’s withdrawal and objections, the party proceeded with the election and announced Sheikh Shifan as the winner.
