Police Arrest Sri Lankan National Over Death of Bangladeshi Worker in Thilafushi

Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrests Sri Lankan national in connection with the death of the Bangladeshi worker in Thilafushi last week.
The victim, Ameen Mia, 24, who worked in Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll, was reported missing to police on Wednesday, 28 January, after he was last seen on Monday, 26 January.
Police said investigations revealed that Ameen died in an accident at a garbage disposal site in Thilafushi on Monday. According to MPS, garbage collection was underway using an excavator when the machine’s bucket struck Ameen, causing him to fall. His body was subsequently moved with the waste and covered with garbage.
Police said CCTV footage shows that although the excavator bucket hit Ameen, he continued working at the site without stopping.
The excavator operator, a 32-year-old Sri Lankan national, was arrested today under a court order in connection with the incident.
Police said further details will be disclosed as the investigation progresses.
