The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has stated that surveying operations are currently underway for the modernisation of the Addu City link road, a major infrastructure project aimed at upgrading the road to contemporary standards.

The project was formally handed over to the RDC in April 2025, marking a key step in addressing long-standing concerns over the condition of the transport network in Addu City. The link road, which was opened to traffic in 2003, has deteriorated significantly over the past two decades. Sporadic repair work carried out over the years has failed to prevent further decline, leaving the road in poor condition.

The link road is relied upon daily by a large section of the population, and its deterioration has increasingly affected road users. Traffic accidents, including fatal incidents, have heightened public concern and underscored the urgency of comprehensive rehabilitation.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured residents that a solution will be delivered. Following the transfer of responsibility to the RDC, work on the project has officially begun. The corporation has stated that the initial phase focuses on surveying, which is required before construction activities can commence. In parallel, surveys are also being conducted on internal roads within Addu City. The RDC has indicated that the surveying phase is expected to conclude in February, after which physical development of the link road will begin.

The RDC has highlighted the scale of the project, noting that the Addu City link road has gone nearly 20 years without proper maintenance. The project, valued at 800 million Rufiyaa, is being implemented under a presidential directive and is considered a significant development for the residents of Addu City.
