The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said all its candidates successfully submitted applications to contest the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections before the deadline.

Speaking to MV+, MDP campaign manager Mohamed Waheed (Waddey), said the party had initially raised concerns over the Elections Commission’s (EC) handling of the application process.

“Our main complaint was the incompetence of the Elections Commission,” Waheed, former Dhidhdhoo MP said. He added that following media coverage and repeated demands by the MDP, the EC took steps to address issues related to the application window.

“As a result, all MDP candidates were able to apply in time to contest the Local Council elections,” he said.

The Local Council and WDC elections are scheduled to be held on 4 April. The Elections Commission had set the deadline for submitting candidacy applications at 3:30pm yesterday.

The MDP has been vocal in recent days about challenges faced by prospective candidates during the application process, including concerns over technical and administrative difficulties. The party has maintained that timely intervention was necessary to ensure fair participation in the upcoming polls.
