A foreign national has been arrested in Hulhumalé in possession of a large quantity of suspected liquor.

Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Bangladeshi national Mehdi Hassan Rana. He was taken into custody on Sunday during a routine patrol in Phase I of Hulhumalé.

Officers stopped and searched the suspect, during which they recovered 26 bottles of suspected liquor from his bag. Each bottle was reported to contain 500 millilitres.

The suspect was later presented before the court for a remand hearing, where the court ordered that he be held in custody for 20 days.

Police said investigations into the case are ongoing and noted an increase in the number of foreign nationals being involved in the illegal liquor trade.
