Maldives Correctional Service reports second inmate death during sentence

A second inmate has died while serving his sentence, the Maldives Correctional Service has confirmed.

The latest death was that of Hassan Niyaz, 45, from S. Hithadhoo, who was incarcerated at Hulhumalé Prison. He suffered a sudden medical emergency on Monday afternoon and was taken to Hulhumalé Hospital at 13:30. Doctors later confirmed that he died at 14:05.

According to Corrections, the police, his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and the National Integrity Commission were notified immediately.

This is the second inmate death reported on Monday. Earlier, Ibrahim Suhail, 53, from Malé, died at 09:05 after receiving a week of treatment at IGMH, where he had been hospitalised with pneumonia.

The Maldives Correctional Service noted that deaths of inmates serving sentences remain relatively rare.
