The Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MoTE) stated that the policy seeks to develop and strengthen water and sewerage systems, establish a framework for a continuous and reliable supply, and expand coverage nationwide. The policy is also intended to improve service standards and ensure equal access for all residents.

Key elements of the policy include the protection of natural freshwater resources and the adoption of technological advancements to improve water and sewerage services. The policy also emphasises research and the development of human resources in this sector.

With the implementation of the policy, the ministry said public awareness programmes will be conducted to inform residents. The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to protect the environment and enhance living standards in the Maldives.
