The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has banned the import and sale of selected Babybio infant formula products after toxic substances were detected in specific batches, the authority said.
In a statement, the MFDA said the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) had notified regulators that French authorities ordered the recall, suspension of sales and destruction of certain Babybio products. The action followed the detection of a toxin known as cereulide.
The MFDA said cereulide is produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus and can cause symptoms including nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain if consumed.

The affected products and batches are Babybio Optima 1 (400g), batch number 900932; Babybio Optima 1 (800g), batch number 894408; and Babybio Caprea 1 (800g), batch numbers 900035 and 899014.
As a precaution, the MFDA has prohibited the importation, sale and consumption of the identified products in the Maldives. The authority urged the public and retailers to check batch numbers carefully and avoid using the affected formula.
