The Maldives Meteorology Services (MMS) has warned that air quality in the northern and central Maldives has declined to unhealthy levels and is expected to persist over the next four days.
MMS reported that haze is affecting these regions today, reducing visibility to three kilometres. The agency advised seafarers and those spending extended periods outdoors to take necessary precautions and follow safety guidelines.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) also urged residents to remain cautious during this period. According to IQAir, a real-time air quality monitoring platform, the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings for selected locations today were:
- Kulhudhufushi City: 112 – Unhealthy for sensitive groups
- Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll: 62 – Moderate
- Villingili, Kaafu Atoll: 163 – Unhealthy
- Malé, Kaafu Atoll: 119 – Unhealthy for sensitive groups
- Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll: 73 – Moderate
MMS and HPA reminded the public that AQI levels above 151 are considered unhealthy, with everyone potentially beginning to experience health effects. Sensitive groups, including people with respiratory or heart conditions, children, and older adults, may experience more serious symptoms.
Authorities advised limiting outdoor activities where possible and following safety measures until air quality improves.
