The Maldives Police Service has requested the removal of vehicles parked at Tsunami Monument Square to allow development work to commence as part of the Malé Scaping Project.
Authorities stated that the ongoing renovation of public squares and parks in Malé requires the area around Tsunami Monument Square to be vacated by 6:00 p.m. on Monday. A chart released by the police identifies the stretch from Tsunami Monument Square to Boduthakurufaanu Magu where vehicles must be cleared to facilitate the work.
The development project has been awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, although officials have not disclosed further details regarding the scope of the work.
The Tsunami Monument was originally constructed to commemorate those who lost their lives in the 2004 tsunami. It was initially located in the area now occupied by the Sinamalé Bridge and was relocated in 2016 to Thin Ruh Park on the western side of Malé.
