The Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and UNICEF, held a “GCF Project Proposal – Initial Stakeholder Workshop” yesterday to discuss a new project concept for submission to the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The workshop forms part of the government’s efforts to expand the range of projects submitted to the GCF and secure financial support for climate change initiatives.
The meeting was opened by Minister of State for Education Dr Ahmed Mohamed. UNICEF Representative Dr Edward Ed and Director General of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment Amjad Abdulla also addressed participants.
During technical sessions, participants discussed the concept notes prepared for the proposal. Discussions focused on strengthening educational institutions, developing climate-resilient schools and ensuring that such facilities benefit both students and surrounding communities.
Participants also reviewed how the proposed project would align with national climate policies, sectoral frameworks and GCF standards. Discussions covered project arrangements, institutional roles and responsibilities, financial structures, safety measures and key implementation steps.
The workshop concluded with agreement to further refine the concept and submit it to the GCF. Minister of State for Education Dr Mohamed Waheed delivered closing remarks, while Vice President Abdul Latheef Mohamed thanked participants and underscored the importance of expediting work on the proposal.
The proposal is being prepared by the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment in collaboration with UNICEF.
