The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) announced that newly printed MVR 100 and MVR 20 notes will enter circulation from 17 February 2026.

The reprint responds to rising demand for cash and the need to replenish the Authority’s reserves. The new notes arrived on 2 February 2026, with the MVR 100 note from the Ran Dhihafaheh series and the MVR 20 notes arriving on 15 February. Governor Ahmed Munawar signed the notes, which carry the dates 31 July 2025 and 6 Safar 1447. Both denominations feature the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol (Rf), first introduced in August 2017. Existing notes will continue to circulate alongside the new supply.

The announcement follows reports of a shortage of MVR 20 notes across the country, which had affected day-to-day cash transactions for businesses and banks. The scarcity intensified last week due to increased cash withdrawals ahead of Ramadan, with lower denominations such as MVR 20 experiencing faster circulation and wear.

The MMA confirmed receipt of the new shipment of MVR 20 notes on 15 February 2026. With the distribution of these notes through the banking system, the Authority expects supply constraints to ease in the coming days.

The new issuance is intended to ensure sufficient availability of cash, support smoother transactions, and maintain the integrity of the Maldivian currency in daily circulation.
