Man sentenced to prison for assaulting and abducting minor in Malé area
The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to prison in connection with the abduction and assault of a minor near the tsunami monument area in Malé.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 1 September last year, when a minor was taken to a vacant area near the tsunami monument and assaulted.
Prosecutors charged two individuals in relation to the case: Ibrahim Naail of Villa Delight, V. Rakeedhoo, and Mohamed Ayaz of Fini Roalhi, R. Dhuvaafaru. Naail was charged with unlawful restraint and physical assault, while Ayaz was charged with unlawfully restraining a person without consent over a prolonged period.
Proceedings against Ayaz remain ongoing before the court. However, the case against Naail has concluded. Last week, the Criminal Court found Naail guilty of unlawful restraint and sentenced him to seven months and six days in prison. He was also convicted of assault and received an additional sentence of one month and six days.
Naail admitted to the charges during the trial, and the case was processed under fast-track procedures as a result of his confession. The case was presided over by Judge Ali Nadeem at the Criminal Court.
