HRCM Receives 43 Whistleblower Cases in December, Refers 20 to Authorities
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) reported receiving 43 cases at its Whistleblower Protection Unit in December 2025, closing eight and referring 20 to relevant authorities.
According to HRCM’s December report, the Commission had 426 registered cases, with 196 cases lodged, including 173 under the Human Rights Commission Act and 23 under the Anti-Torture Act. In total, 306 cases were closed during the month, including cases sent to the Prosecutor General, while 307 cases remain ongoing. The Commission also observed four protests and monitored one case with the Prosecutor General.
The South Regional Office registered 32 cases in December, lodging 21 and closing 74, while 45 cases remain active.
The Commission Bureau held 51 meetings to address submitted cases and manage departmental and administrative work. Internationally, HRCM members and staff attended 55 conferences and symposiums and 10 regional and international meetings. Awareness and training sessions reached various groups, including 5,691 children, 116 teachers, 202 migrant workers, 452 civil servants, 117 judiciary and independent organisation members, 45 private sector staff, 73 CSOs, and 2,364 members of the general public.
In December, HRCM conducted five public events, one online course, 15 training sessions, three seminars and webinars, and 35 information sessions. Media work included seven news releases, four press releases, and 16 media appearances.
The Commission also prepared monitoring reports, including the CRC shadow report, the UPR shadow report submitted to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and reports on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.
HRCM proposed five bills, including the Public Referendum Bill, Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, Land Transport Bill, and Re-Employment Bill, and prepared eight legal reviews.
