The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, has stated that the international community shares a collective responsibility to uphold the universal principle that all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights at the General Debate of the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council yesterday.

In his statement, Dr Khaleel reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and stressed its continued relevance in the current global context. He recalled its core principle that all people are “born free and equal in dignity and rights” and emphasised the shared duty of states to uphold these values.

He highlighted the importance of strengthened multilateral cooperation to advance human rights, particularly in the face of emerging global challenges. The Minister underscored the need to safeguard the credibility and impartiality of the international human rights system through constructive dialogue and principled engagement.

Dr Khaleel also outlined ongoing national efforts to strengthen democratic governance, reinforce the rule of law, and improve institutional accountability. He pointed to progress in anti-corruption measures, expanded support for vulnerable and marginalised groups — including women entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities and children — and improvements in social services.

The Minister noted the Maldives’ continued engagement with international mechanisms, including the completion of its fourth Universal Periodic Review, and reiterated the country’s advocacy for greater participation of Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in the Council’s work.

During his address, Dr Khaleel formally announced the Maldives’ candidature for election to the Human Rights Council for the 2028–2030 term, reaffirming the country’s commitment to contributing constructively to the Council’s mandate.

Concluding his remarks, he called on the Council to uphold credible standards, ensure inclusive processes, and deliver meaningful outcomes, while reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to the universality, indivisibility and interdependence of all human rights.
