An employee has been critically injured in an incident at a site operated by the Waste Management Corporation in Malé.

Police said the man sustained serious injuries inside the WAMCO premises on Sunday evening. According to authorities, he is currently being treated on a ventilator at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. An investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the incident.

The case came to public attention after a social media post circulated with a photograph from the scene. The post alleged that the man fell into a container from a WAMCO ramp at around 3.00 am on Sunday. The ramp is estimated to be around 12 to 13 feet above the container.

The latest incident follows another major case reported from a WAMCO site in January. A 24-year-old foreign worker was found dead two days after he went missing from the Thilafushi WAMCO site.

Police later stated that the worker, identified as Ameen Mia, died after falling from an excavator while clearing waste on the afternoon of 26 January. His body was reportedly moved along with debris during the operation.

CCTV footage showed the excavator striking the worker, after which work continued. The operator, Madranga Dissanayaka Menika, a 32-year-old Sri Lankan national, was arrested and detained. Police informed the court that the driver had been working illegally at the time of the incident.

The latest accident has renewed scrutiny over safety standards and supervision at WAMCO sites. Two serious incidents within a short period, including one fatality and another leaving an employee in critical condition, have prompted concerns over workplace safety practices.

The recurring nature of falls and machinery-related injuries has led to questions regarding existing safety protocols, oversight mechanisms and staff training at high-risk waste management sites. Authorities continue to investigate the most recent incident.
