Previously, the deadline for flat applications was set for 17 April, while land plot applications were due to close on 4 March.

The Government is planning to issue 7,000 flats and 15,000 land plots under the housing scheme, which was launched on 18 January. Each land plot will measure 1,250 square feet.

According to the Ministry, 5,067 applications had been received as of this week. Of these, 1,633 applications were for land plots and 3,434 were for flats. An additional 11,304 application forms were in draft status.

Eligibility for the scheme is restricted to registered residents of Malé and individuals from other islands who have lived in the capital for at least 15 years.

For flats, allocation is divided into three categories. A total of 4,000 units are reserved for Malé residents, 1,500 units are allocated for residents from other islands living in Malé, and 2,400 units are designated for special categories.

President Mohamed Muizzu previously announced plans to issue a total of 25,000 land plots from Rasmale’, which is being developed to help address housing shortages in the capital. The first phase of the scheme will allocate 15,000 land plots.

The Government has also stated that the current scheme restricts applications from individuals whose spouses already own land in the Malé area. To address this, a new housing programme will be introduced later.

Under the previous administration’s Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, joint land plot recipients who agree to relinquish their allocated plot will be allowed to apply separately under the new scheme.

Housing Minister Abdulla Muththalib said work is under way to finalise policies for the upcoming housing programme. He added that applications for the new scheme are expected to open in early March.
