The government is seeking contractors for the construction of 1,000 housing units in Hulhumale’ Phase III under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model on a design-and-build basis.

The 1,000 housing units planned for Hulhumale’ Phase III will be developed under the affordable home ownership model, which is intended to provide housing above basic living standards.

Participation in the project is restricted to companies that are 100 per cent Maldivian-owned, a policy aimed at promoting local business involvement and strengthening domestic capacity in the construction sector.

Proposal submissions for the project are open until 13:00 on 23 March.

The Government’s Housing for All policy initially targets the allocation of 7,900 housing units within the Greater Male’ region.

Construction has already commenced on 3,272 affordable housing units. These include 312 flats in Villimale’, 546 units in Hulhumale’ Phase I and 2,414 units in Hulhumale’ Phase III.

These housing developments are being carried out by the Bank of Maldives.

In addition to the units financed through domestic arrangements, 4,000 housing units are being funded by India. The Saudi Fund for Development and other international partners are also financing housing projects.

Overall, more than 9,000 housing units are currently under various stages of construction across the Maldives as part of the national housing programme.
