The Prosecutor General’s Office has received chargesheets against Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir and Local Council candidate Fathimath Zahiya, also known as Zaya, in connection with an opposition protest held in the capital on 3 October 2025.

Police have also forwarded a case against Abdul Salam, of Maafolheyvilla, Noonu Holhudhoo and Aishath Najdha Ali of Haa Dhaal Kulhudhuffushi to the prosecutor’s office. Authorities have informed all three individuals in writing that their cases have been sent for prosecution. The cases will be submitted to court if the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) decides to proceed.

The charges allege that the three gathered on city streets in violation of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, disrupted public transport and business activity, disobeyed police orders and obstructed police duties during the rally.

The protest, organised by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), began at Artificial Beach and attempted to continue along Majeedhee Magu. Police intervened to disperse the demonstration, using loud noise devices and pepper spray.

Eight people were arrested during the protest. Six were remanded in custody for 15 days.

In a post on X following news of the charges, Mauroof said President Mohamed Muizzu must understand that charging him would not hinder the party’s local council election campaign, nor would the public support him in the referendum.

The chargesheets come as the MDP prepares for another rally on 21 March, opposing the government’s decision to hold a referendum on conducting parliamentary and presidential elections at the same time.
