Minister of Animal Welfare Dr Maryam Mariya stated that 352 cats have been relocated to Olhuhiyaa, the facility in Farukolhufushi, Hulhumalé, with more scheduled to arrive next week.
The Olhuhiyaa facility, which opened in November 2024, has faced criticism over construction quality and delays in relocating cats. Concerns have been raised by the public about the slow progress in transferring animals to the centre.
During a press conference today, Minister Mariya provided updates on ongoing developments at the facility. She said a veterinary clinic has been established on site, and efforts to neuter and spay the cats are underway. To date, 60 male cats have been neutered, while five female cats have undergone spaying procedures.
Mariya also outlined operational details, noting that MVR 368 per cat is allocated monthly from the facility’s budget, amounting to MVR 5,416 annually for each animal.
The Minister emphasised that the government remains committed to improving conditions at Olhuhiyaa and ensuring the welfare of the animals housed there.
