Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has confirmed that no criminal investigation is underway regarding former President Dr Mohamed Waheed’s links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Waheed resigned from his position as Special Envoy to the President on 3 February, following public scrutiny over his interactions with Epstein while serving as vice president and after his presidency. Earlier this week, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that Waheed resigned upon the President’s instruction.
When questioned about the matter, Minister Ihusaan said during a press conference that no cases related to the Epstein files have been filed with the Maldives Police Service, and he is not personally investigating the issue.
The release of the Epstein Files by the United States Department of Justice in January linked Waheed to Epstein. The documents, published under the Epstein Files Transparency Act (H.R. 4405), reference Waheed in 649 records, including emails discussing the potential sale of Innareha Island. Waheed reportedly declined the sale, stating the island was “too beautiful to be ‘sold’ to just anyone.”
Authorities note that there is no evidence implicating Waheed in any of the sex trafficking crimes for which Epstein was convicted.
