Construction of the domestic airport on Magoodhoo in Faafu Atoll has progressed to the interior fit-out stage of the passenger terminal, marking a new phase in the project that began in 2022.
The development forms part of a 30-hectare land reclamation and infrastructure initiative. Work has continued despite local scepticism regarding the project’s timeline.
The current stage of construction follows an intervention by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. During an official visit to the island last year, residents raised concerns over delays amid speculation that the government might prioritise the development of a competing airport in nearby Nilandhoo. On 21 September, the president addressed the island’s population of around 1,000 residents and assured them that the Magoodhoo airport would be completed within one year.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the state-owned company responsible for the USD 14.98 million project, has stated that current work is focused on completing reclamation zones and strengthening the shoreline. In areas where land reclamation has been completed, rock boulders have been placed for coastal protection to stabilise the reclaimed land.
The passenger terminal building has reached 48 percent completion and has moved beyond primary structural work to the installation of tiles and interior fixtures. Progress has also been recorded across other key components of the airport infrastructure.
The 1,200-metre runway is 58 percent complete, with foundational layers prepared for asphalt surfacing. Construction of the fire station has reached 67 percent completion.
With the main structural elements of the buildings now established, the project has shifted towards technical installations and interior finishing. MTCC has also begun adjusting its workflow to align with the government’s accelerated construction schedule and operational requirements.
