The government has commenced construction of a new hospital on the island of Alifushi as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services in the region.
According to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), groundwork at the project site is currently under way, with foundation footing reinforcement, shuttering preparation and excavation works in progress. The project has been awarded to MTCC at a cost of USD 8,279,828.90 and is scheduled for completion within two years. Once completed, the facility will have a capacity of 30 beds.
Alifushi has a population of around 3,000 and is located relatively far from other islands in Raa Atoll. The new hospital is intended to improve access to healthcare services for residents of Alifushi as well as nearby Vaadhoo, particularly as the population of the area continues to grow.
The hospital forms part of a wider agreement that also includes the development of hospitals in Muli and Manadhoo.
The Ministry of Health has stated that the three hospital projects are aimed at addressing existing capacity constraints and improving the availability of healthcare services for residents across the respective regions.
Healthcare services in Alifushi are currently provided through a local health clinic. The new hospital is expected to expand the range of medical services available on the island, including the introduction of specialist medical care.
The facilities are also intended to strengthen the country’s preparedness during disease outbreaks, such as those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospitals will include flu clinics and isolation facilities to ensure continuity of operations during public health emergencies.
Solar photovoltaic systems will also be installed at the facilities to help reduce energy costs. In addition, all hospital beds will be equipped with piped oxygen, medical air and suction systems.
The project forms part of the government’s broader efforts to expand and strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the Maldives.
