Work on Phase 3 of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment is set to begin today, focusing on the expansion and modernisation of the stretch from Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Izzuddeen Jetty, with authorities announcing changes to traffic flow during the construction period.
Police have stated that the section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu from Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Chandhanee Magu will be closed from midnight, along with adjoining lanes that provide access to this stretch. As a result, the road beside Barcelos Nasandhura will be converted to allow vehicles to exit from Boduthakurufaanu Magu.
The changes will come into effect from 12:00am as work begins across segments two to five of the redevelopment project. Police have also instructed that all vehicles parked within the affected area must be removed before the closure and have acknowledged potential inconvenience while seeking public cooperation.
Male’ City Council has also announced the closure of the lagoon in the area for vessel docking as part of the project. The first phase of lagoon closure will cover the area from Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Fishermen’s Park until completion of works, followed by the closure from Fishermen’s Park to Jetty No. 5 from 30 March. The final stretch from Jetty No. 5 to Izzuddeen Jetty is scheduled to close from 17 April onwards.
As part of the changes, atoll ferry services operating from Henveiru Terminal have been temporarily relocated to Maafannu Ferry Terminal and Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Managing Director Ahmed Saudhy has previously stated that, according to the current schedule, the full redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu is expected to be completed by April or May.
Work on the section from the North Harbour to Republic Square has already been completed and reopened to the public, with the road widened to accommodate additional lanes, contributing to an improvement in traffic flow.
