A major infrastructure upgrade has begun in Gemanafushi as the Road Development Corporation Limited (RDC) commenced work on the modernisation of five key roads across the island.
The project, awarded to RDC in June 2023, began active construction on 18 March and represents a significant step towards fulfilling President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to improve connectivity and infrastructure in the island’s administrative and industrial areas.
The development plan includes full paving using zigzag interlocking blocks, installation of street lighting, construction of drainage canals, creation of tree pits, and integration of junctions to accommodate future service cables. A modern stormwater management system is also being installed to address frequent flooding, a persistent challenge for the island.
Additional works include laying carbstone pathways, placing road signs, and general paving to improve safety and accessibility. The project carries a total investment of USD 4.94 million, reflecting the government’s broader commitment to equitable development across the Maldives.
The RDC is leading similar road improvement initiatives nationwide, prioritising sustainable and resilient solutions over conventional tarmacking. Efforts focus on enhancing sand roads, flood resilience, and infrastructure durability, particularly in islands with significant tourism activity.
