President Muizzu Reaffirms Commitment to Ending Tuberculosis in Maldives

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving a future free of tuberculosis, highlighting new foundational efforts to strengthen early detection, diagnostics, and care for vulnerable populations.
In a message marking World Tuberculosis Day, the President said tuberculosis remains a major global, regional and local public health challenge, despite progress in prevention and treatment. He noted that the Maldives is recognised as a low TB burden country and remains committed to becoming a leader in ending the disease.
The President said this year marks the beginning of key efforts to accelerate progress, with a focus on strengthening early detection, improving access to rapid diagnostics and quality treatment, enhancing surveillance, and ensuring support for vulnerable groups.
He added that coordinated national efforts, the dedication of health workers, and active community participation are essential to controlling and ultimately eliminating tuberculosis.
The President also expressed appreciation to health professionals and community members working in TB prevention, detection and treatment in the Maldives and globally, and reaffirmed the Government’s shared responsibility in achieving a TB-free future.
In a post on his official X account, he reiterated the commitment to maintaining the Maldives’ low TB burden status and stressed the importance of collective action alongside health workers.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also highlighted the human impact of tuberculosis in a post on X, noting that each case affects individuals and families. She emphasised the importance of awareness, timely care, and building supportive communities to address the disease.
World Tuberculosis Day is observed annually on 24 March. This year’s theme is “Yes! We Can End TB: Led by Countries, Powered by People.”
