The road construction project in Hoadedhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll has officially commenced, marking a key step in the island’s infrastructure development.
The inauguration was presided over by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, signalling the start of works aimed at improving transport and public services on the island. The project has been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited.
The initiative will focus on tarring major roads, installing a comprehensive drainage system, and introducing street lighting, with the objective of modernising the island’s transportation network and enhancing overall living conditions.
Senior officials and stakeholders attended the ceremony, including Minister of State at the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Ismail Hameed, MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed, Madaveli MP Mohamed Shameez, Hoadedhdhoo Council President Hussain Warish, council members, and representatives of the Women’s Development Committee.
MTCC stated that the project is expected to deliver broader social and economic benefits by improving accessibility, increasing road safety, and strengthening resilience to weather-related challenges.
The development forms part of a wider government strategy to expand modern infrastructure across the Maldives while accommodating local preferences. Authorities have maintained that islands will not be required to pave roads where traditional sand pathways support tourism, with alternative solutions such as flood management vehicles and road maintenance equipment to be provided based on community needs.
