Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa has vowed that his party will retain all mayoral positions and secure city council seats in Saturday’s local elections.
Hanimaadhoo MP Ghafoor outlined the party’s objectives at a rally in Kulhudhuffushi yesterday, stating that the party would aim to “take the mayor and all the seats” and challenge the current government.
He highlighted several incumbents as key candidates for re-election, including Ali Nizar in Addu, Adam Azim in Male’, Ismail Rafeeq in Fuvahmulah, Mohamed Athif in Kulhudhuffushi, and Saud Ali in Gaafu Dhaal Thinadhoo.
During his speech, Ghafoor criticised the government’s policies and operations, describing it as a “Vulture” and accusing officials of unfair practices. He also raised concerns over potential job losses and utility disruptions, claiming that government employees could face layoffs and power cuts after the elections.
He reassured voters that if the MDP wins, any employees dismissed by the current administration would be compensated, and claims of unfair dismissals would be addressed.
“The government is a group robbing people of their rights. We are determined to restore peace in the country,” Ghafoor said. He encouraged citizens not to fear job security when casting their votes.
The local council elections on Saturday are seen as a significant test for both the ruling administration and the opposition ahead of the next national election cycle.
