Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has commenced Phase 3 of the Taxiway Charlie redevelopment project at Velana International Airport (VIA), as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade critical airside infrastructure.
According to MACL, the project is being carried out in four phases and was awarded to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) on 16 October 2024. Physical works began on 10 April 2025.
Phase 3 of the project involves the redevelopment of 1,100 metres of Taxiway Charlie and is scheduled for completion by 31 October 2026.
MACL stated that the redevelopment forms part of its broader infrastructure development programme aimed at improving operational efficiency, enhancing safety, and supporting long-term capacity growth at VIA.
The 3,200-metre strip was originally constructed in 1976 as the airport’s first runway and was upgraded in 1981 to accommodate wide-body aircraft, according to the company. Over the years, it underwent multiple extensions to meet increasing aviation demands.
The runway sustained significant damage following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, requiring ongoing repairs to remain operational. After the opening of the new Code F runway in October 2022, the original runway was converted into Taxiway Charlie, where it continues to serve as a key component of airport operations.
