The Malé City Group of Hospitals has inaugurated core decompression surgical technology at Dharumavantha Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of osteonecrosis, a condition involving the deterioration of bone in the hip joint.

The procedure enhances orthopaedic services in the country by using specialised instruments to remove damaged bone and support regeneration through the use of bone grafts and platelet-rich plasma.

The surgical technique represents a shift towards minimally invasive treatment, as it requires only a small incision, reducing physical strain on patients and improving recovery outcomes.

The introduction of the service follows extensive preparation by doctors, nurses and technical staff across orthopaedic departments at both hospitals, with efforts focused on ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality healthcare.

The development forms part of broader initiatives to expand specialised medical services within the Maldives, including the recent introduction of vitreoretinal surgery for advanced eye care at both facilities.
