Addu Equatorial Hospital, in collaboration with the National Cardiac Center, has commenced advanced treatment for heart diseases, marking the first time critical, time-sensitive cardiac care has been made available in the southern region.

The services were introduced during a special medical tour conducted from 31 March to 2 April, which included the launch of primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), a procedure used to open blocked arteries during heart attacks and significantly improve survival rates and patient outcomes.

During the visit, specialist teams also introduced additional cardiac treatments, including the implantation of Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators and permanent pacemakers, expanding the scope of care available to patients in the region.

Medical teams carried out a total of 11 angiograms and six angioplasties over the course of the tour, providing essential and potentially lifesaving treatment to patients in Addu and nearby islands.

The initiative aligns with the policy of Mohamed Muizzu to decentralise healthcare services and ensure access to specialised treatment across the country.

The introduction of advanced cardiac care at Addu Equatorial Hospital is expected to significantly reduce the need for emergency medical evacuations to Malé or overseas, enabling faster treatment for heart conditions and strengthening healthcare services in the southern atolls.
