A sudden wave of job openings announced by government-affiliated institutions late last night, with a 24-hour application deadline, has raised concerns over potential influence on voters ahead of today’s elections.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) opened applications for around nine positions, including technical assistant, site supervisor, and assistant administrative officer. The Ministry of Construction also announced vacancies for roles such as graphic designer and marketing officer. The openings were posted sometime late last night, with the deadline set for this afternoon.

The announcements, made just hours before voting began, have prompted scrutiny, with concerns that the timing of the recruitment drive could be aimed at influencing public sentiment during the polls.

Beyond the latest recruitment announcements, local councils and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) across the country have also carried out widespread hiring drives this year in the lead-up to the ongoing local council elections. The opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has recently accused the government of distributing jobs to the public in an attempt to influence voting in the ongoing local council elections.

However, President Mohamed Muizzu has previously rejected allegations that recent job announcements in local islands were aimed at securing public support ahead of elections, insisting that neither he nor his administration engages in such practices.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Muizzu instead accused the previous administration of politicising recruitment, citing state utility company Fenaka as an example.
